Zarmavdian

The Watchful, Founder of Otari (Roseguard)

Appearance

A figure shrouded in mystery, remembered as a learned dwarven diviner — a wizard who also wrote poetry, mended clocks, and painted landscapes.

Personality

Erudite and inquisitive, a collector of secrets (some of them foolish), forever chasing conspiracies that his companions indulged with affection. It was his reading of the signs — a sorcerer's lighthouse on an empty coast, built for no honest purpose — that sent the Roseguard to Gauntlight.

Backstory

Least known of the four, a dwarf of uncertain origin, though rumor places his birth in one of the dwarven sky citadels of the north. After the Roseguard founded Otari, the town whispered that he kept a laboratory of elemental magic somewhere beneath it — a vaulted workshop of fire, water, air, and stone — but no such place has ever been uncovered. He did not die in Otari. In the town's early years he departed one night without farewell, leaving his rooms in good order and taking only his great grimoire, Thresholds of Truth, in which he had set down every spell he mastered; the tome is held today in a warded collection in Absalom. The common account says he returned north to his studies. He left no descendants and no grave, and Otari honors him each Founders' Day with Zarmavdian's Riddles competition.
